FRIENDS OF MUSIC CONCERTS announces the first concerts of our 2019/2020 season of free concerts to be held in the comfortable atmosphere and excellent acoustics of Eliot Unitarian Chapel at 100 South Taylor (at Argonne) in Kirkwood. The entire 2019/2020 season is dedicated to the memory of the late Robert Kern, long-time board member and ardent supporter of FOMC.
The first concert will be on September 15 at 3pm and will feature vocals by Stella Markou accompanied by pianist Martin Kennedy.
On October 20, W. Mark Akin will play guitar music from Spain, England, and Brazil, and the Osler Quartet will perform Brahms G Minor Piano Quartet.
And, on November 3, soprano Erika Johnson will sing jazz and blues selections, and Trio Arioso will perform Brahms C Major Piano Trio.
Friends of Music Concerts deeply mourns the sudden passing of Robert Kern, a crucial member of our Board for many, many years. Bob's contributions to FOMC were legion.
He was our Treasurer, took responsibility for maintaining our 503(c)(3) non-profit status, initiated our website, and over the years handled publicity and media relations, mailings, invitations to retirement communities, and, together with his wife Marcia, also a Board member, was ever present at our concerts handing out programs and collecting donations. Bob was always a reliable and stabilizing force in our operations, and after the death of FOMC founder Lee Werner, was the Board member who recruited Kathi and me as co- directors of the series.
He will be sorely missed by all of us involved in Friends of Music Concerts, and we will be dedicating the entire 2019/2020 season to the memory of this exceptional man.
Jeffrey Kurtzman, Co-Director
Friends of Music Concerts
Every summer, the Arianna String Quartet hosts an intensive chamber music festival right here in St. Louis. Young artists from St. Louis to Santiago (Chile), California to Korea, engage in a cultural exchange of musical ideas.
The Arianna Chamber Music Festival uses the art of chamber music playing to teach life skills of creative and critical thinking, collaborative team work, and self-expression. Skills and ideas that they take back with them to build connections and communities.
Friends of Music Concerts has entered into a mutually beneficial relationship this season with the Arianna String Quartet and its summer program, the Arianna Chamber Music Festival. On Sunday, December 2, 2018 The Arianna String Quartet performed a concert on our 2018/2019 season featuring Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” Quartet (based on a Schubert song by that name) and the remarkable Quartet in C# minor Op. 131 by Beethoven. This is the first season that the Arianna String Quartet has performed for Friends of Music Concerts.
Each year, Arianna Arts, Inc. holds the Arianna Chamber Music Festival; an international program that emphasizes intensive study of chamber music and cultural exchange. Students from across the U.S. and abroad, as well as from St. Louis, work together and socialize for a memorable, enriching and rewarding experience. On the evenings of Sunday, June 2, 2019 and Tuesday, June 4, 2019, students from the Arianna Chamber Music Festival will perform for us at Eliot Chapel. Half of the proceeds from these two concerts will go to Arianna to support the Festival.
All concerts are free and scheduled at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoons in the comfortable atmosphere and excellent acoustics of Eliot Unitarian Chapel at 100 South Taylor (at Argonne) in Kirkwood. The schedule for our concerts is listed below. Put these dates on your calendar so you don't miss any.
Students from the Arianna Chamber Music Festival will be featured on the June concerts.
Our 2018/2019 Season was expanded to eight concerts, thanks to the Arianna String Quartet and the Arianna Chamber Music Festival. The Quartet itself performed the December 2, 2018 concert. The June 2nd and 4th concerts will feature young artists participating in the Music Festival . For further information, phone (314) 596-2519, or contact us by e-mail at [email protected].
