Jeffrey Kurtzman, Co-Director
JEFFREY KURTZMAN earned his B.M. degree in Piano Performance from the University of Colorado,and his M.M. and Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne. He has taught at Cornell University, Middlebury College, the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, and is Professor of Music and former Chair of the Department of Music at Washington University. The winner of several teaching awards at Rice University and the recipient of fellowships and grants from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund for Music, The National Endowment for the Humanities, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies and the Deutscher Akademischer Austaushdienst, he specializes in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Italian music. He has published books, editions and articles on the music of Claudio Monteverdi and other sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Italian composers, a ten-volume series of editions of Italian Vespers and Compline music of the seventeenth century, and together with Anne Schnoebelen, a complete online catalogue of Music for the Mass, Office and Holy Week, 1516-1770. Kurtzman was the founding president of the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music, Reviews Editor for the Society’s Journal, serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal and the Society’s Web Library of Seventeenth-Century Music and was recently named an Honorary Member of the Society. He is currently General Editor of the 20-volume Opera Omnia of the seventeenth-century Italian composer Alessandro Grandi being published by the American Institute of Musicology and an Anthology of Seventeenth-Century Italian Instrumental Music being published by the Web Library of Seventeenth-Century Music.
Kathi Kurtzman, Co-Director
KATHI KURTZMAN earned her B.M. degree in Piano Performance from the University of Colorado and her M.M. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She studied at Illinois with Stanley Fletcher and Malcom Bilson, and has attended the Early Music Performance Institute at Oberlin College, where she again worked with renowned fortepianist Malcom Bilson. She has also participated in the Dorothy Taubman Institute. Mrs. Kurtzman has performed piano and fortepiano recitals and taught hundreds of students at Cornell University, Middlebury College, Rice University, and Washington University in St. Louis. Composers Dexter Mabry and Paul Cooper have dedicated new compositions to her. Now retired from Washington University, she teaches a large class of private students in University City and is President of the Ladies Friday Music Club of St. Louis.
ALAN ROSENKOETTER, a native of St. Louis and mentor to most of the St. Louis area guitar teachers, was trained in Europe from 1964 to 1966 at the Schola Cantorum in Paris in courses under the direction of Presti/Lagoya and studied subsequently in master classes in the United States with the Italian protegé of Segovia, Oscar Ghiglia. He was a member of Mr. Ghiglia’s first class at the Aspen Festival in 1969. He received his AB degree in Music from Washington University in St. Louis in 1974.
While in Paris he was also active in theater, working with the La Mama Theater Company and directors such as Ellen Stewart and Tom O’Horgan. He was involved in technical work as well as providing music for various productions. He also provided music for performances of “An Homage to Gertrude Stein” at the American Embassy in Paris. He began to teach while in Paris as well: at the École Mozart and at the American Center for Students and Artists.
Since returning to St. Louis he has taught at several area schools, notably Washington University, University of Missouri at St. Louis, and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He has performed in recital and with various ensembles in the St. Louis area: the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Opera Theater of St. Louis including a national tour in 1985 in John Gay’s Beggers Opera and Gittern soloist in Britten’s Gloriana in June of 2005, and as soloist with the orchestras of University City, Kirkwood, and Washington U. He has also given performances of a wide array of chamber music from Renaissance to Contemporary including performances with The Kingsbury Ensemble and U. M. St. Louis Opera Studio as Baroque guitarist in Dido and Aneas.
He is currently on the faculties of Washington U. and U.M. St. Louis and is Head of Guitar at both schools.
ROBERT (BOB) CHAMBERLIN has been a member of the Webster University faculty since 1973. He retired in May 2015. While at Webster, he has also served as the Director of Academic Advising, Director of the London campus, and as Acting Dean of Students. In 1974 he coordinated a festival of microtonal music, held at Webster University. Bob earned degrees in theory and composition from St. Olaf College and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and completed additional studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His principal composition instructors include Arthur Campbell, W. Alan Oldfield, Ben Johnston, and Salvatore Martirano.
Bob’s compositions include works for orchestra, wind ensemble, chamber ensembles, organ, chorus, dance, and incidental music for theatrical productions. He has received commissions from the Webster University Symphony Orchestra, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Mid America Dance Company, Tapsichore, Metro Theatre Company and the Band of Mid-America at Scott Air Force Base. In 1991, he was awarded a Creative Artists Project Grant from the Missouri Arts Council. Professor Chamberlin has collaborated with artists including the University of Illinois Contemporary Chamber Players, Jerry Young, and Peter Mayer. His compositions have been performed throughout the United States and Canada, as well as in the Netherlands and Poland.
An active member of the American Guild of Organists, he is organist for Gethsemane Lutheran Church.
JAN CHAMBERLIN has been the Music Director of Eliot Unitarian Chapel since 1997. In that position, she plans worship music, directs the Children's Chalice Choir, the Eliot Hand Bells and the Women’s Chorale. She holds a Bachelor of Music Ed. and Masters in Church Music from Webster University. On a national level, Jan is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Musician's Network and earned her Certificate of Music Leadership from the UUA in 2016. Jan likes to spend her free time gardening.
Marcia & Robert Kern
BOB AND MARCIA KERN are graduates of Washington University in Saint Louis. He spent his working career as a partner in Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers); serving in Saint Louis, MO; Santiago, Chile; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Little Rock, AR; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and the US National Office in New York City. Both have been active in many community activities in the places they lived and worked. In Saint Louis Bob has served on the Boards of The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis and the Saint Louis Brass Band. Bob and Marcia are both long-time volunteers at the ScholarShops, a fundraising arm of The Scholarship Foundation and both serve on the Board of Directors of the Kirkwood Historical Society. Both are on the Board of Friends of Music Concerts and responsible for back office activities including publicity and finances; and both usher at most concerts. Obviously both love music.
BEVERLY FIELD earned a Bachelors and Master of Music in Performance from SIU-E and subsequently did post-graduate studies at Indiana University. She has been a member of the Savannah Symphony, the Metropolitan Orchestra, the St. Louis Philharmonic, Union Avenue Opera and St. Louis Opera Theatre. She was a member of the Muny Orchestra for 30 years and has performed Broadway shows and ballet at the Fox Theatre. Beverly founded the Nouvelle Quartet and was a member of The Appassionata Quartet for 8 seasons. She continues to play opera and chamber music as well as freelance engagements in the St. Louis area.
In 1993 Beverly graduated from Washington University with a PhD in Clinical Psychology. She was the faculty psychologist with the Pain Management Center at the Washington University School of Medicine until her retirement in 2017.
A passionate promoter of new music, STELLA MARKOU has been a featured soloist for the International Computer Music Conference, Heidelberg New Music Festival, SEAMUS Festival, Florida Electro-Acoustic Music Festival, Electronic Music Midwest, and with the Dance New Amsterdam Company, among others. She placed first in both the Doctorate Division of NATS and the Arizona Opera Guild Competition. She is the 2005 recipient of the Arizona Community Foundation/Piper Enrichment Grant. Her work can be found on the SEAMUS record label.
Ms. Markou is a frequent recitalist and lecturer, most recently giving a rare performance of Alberto Ginastera's Cantata para América Mágica as part of the University of Nevada Las Vegas' Guest Artist Series. She has also performed in Master Classes with Shirley Emmons, Cynthia Munzer, Warren Jones, and Bo Skovhus.
Ms. Markou previously held faculty appointments at Pima Community College and the Music Academy of Tucson. She holds degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music and completed her Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Arizona.
